When Mario and Luigi came into the world, the Koopa Kingdom sensed that they would defeat the Koopas, and tried to steal the babies from the Stork. He successfully captured Chibi!Luigi and the Stork, but Chibi!Mario fell to Earth, and was caught and saved by a Yoshi. This Yoshi led a team of eight Yoshis to protect Chibi!Mario and rescue Chibi!Luigi and the Stork, and the Stork eventually delivered the babies to America and Japan.

America, Japan, Italy, and Romano raised Mario and Luigi, so the Mario Bros. live out a mix of the cultures:
Mario and Luigi love pasta, pizza, and tomatoes, and they have Italian accents, like Italy and Romano;
They like burgers and fast food (Mario promotions are fairly common at burger-based fast food restaurants such as McDonald's, Burger King, and Wendy's) and lived in Brooklyn and became carpenters, a wrecking crew, and plumbers in America;
They trained in Eastern religions, especially Shintoism and Buddhism, under Japan to become onmyoji (Shinto exorcists).

Mario uses a mix of Shinto/Buddhist fire rituals, and Roman Catholic Christopagan magic that calls upon the Ancient!Roman god Mars, to use a variety of powerful fire spells such as his signature fireballs, and he can also use ofuda (paper talismans) to perform exorcisms that destroy or cast out evil spirits such as Boos and Poes.

After Italy and Romano left the Freedom Fighters to join the Eggman Empire, the Mario Bros. cut off contact with them and took refuge in small countries such as the Mushroom Kingdom, and they founded their own team of Freedom Fighters and continued to save the world from evil.

When he first met Sonic, Mario was a rival to the blue hedgehog, but they worked together to protect the Free World, especially America and Japan.
At one point, however, shortly after the Space Colony ARK incident, Mario saved Sonic's life and got him back onto his sneakers, and after that, Mario and Sonic combined their Freedom Fighter Teams and fought side-by-side to defeat the evil forces of the Evil Eggman Empire.
